The Upper Yellowstone Snowmobile Club was established in February of 1972. Donald R Laubach was the original incorporator with David Gwalthney, Erwin Treuner, and James Batzhoff, the temporary board at the time of incorporation.
In 2004 Sno-West rated Cooke City, Montana the number one snowmobile destination in the United States. This, arguably, remains true today. Although other places offer other amenities, none have the total package that Cooke City offers. Cooke City is definitely home to the steep and deep but also has 33 miles of groomed trails to get you there. Add in the rolling hills, the vast tree riding, an average of 200” inches of annual snow and you have a back-country snowmobilers dream.
The terrain does not exclude anyone and has plenty of room for extreme backcountry skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing and even snowshoeing.
All the hotels, cabins and VBRO’s allow for riding to the powder right from your front door in just a short time. You can ride right to your favorite restaurant or bar to enjoy your favorite meal, adult beverage or a family get together.
The local avalanche center, Friends of the Gallatin National Forrest Avalanche Center, have a beacon check and a memory map right as you start up Hwy 212 to head to the back country and the Top of the World. They also do Friday night meetings and host a Saturday beacon locate park at Round Lake. Education to keep us all safe.
Cooke City provides rentals of all major sled brands and sizes, to get the whole family involved. You can also rent all your avalanche gear like beacons, probes and Avy bags.
The Upper Yellowstone Snowmobile Club hosts several fundraisers throughout the sledding season. Our major event is the annual Hog Roast in March. The UYSC is one of 2 known clubs to own our own Snow Groomer. The groomer and the groomer professionals are funded by these fundraisers and grants from the state of Montana. We appreciate everyone’s volunteer time and the donations to keep the groomer maintained.
It’s your support that keeps your club thriving. It’s you, volunteering and helping others that makes this the best club, in Montana. It’s our businesses and community support that keeps our motorized back country access available. It’s everyone working together that makes Cooke City, Montana the #1 back country sledding destination in the United States of America.
